Gently supporting a toddler's tantrum

What helps when your child is in a storm of feelings – and it all becomes too much for you too.

Anger is not a parenting mistake – it's a developmental signal.

In the wave

  • Breathe deeply and feel yourself – your calm is the bridge.
  • Move to safety: sharp corners, stairs, the road.
  • Speak little, but stay present: "I'm here. You are safe."

When the wave subsides

  • Offer comfort, without pushing.
  • Give words to the feeling ("You were so angry because…").
  • A solution or making amends can come later.

Be gentle with yourself

  • If you're close to exploding yourself: 30 seconds at the door, cold water, breath.
  • If you often lose control yourself: a counselling service (e.g. your local parenting counselling) helps free of charge.

You don't have to radiate perfect calm – just keep the connection.
