What U2 to U9 roughly mean – and how to experience appointments more calmly.

The U check-ups are Germany's routine preventive appointments with the paediatrician – they support you in keeping an eye on your child's development together.

Rough overview

  • U2–U3: in the first weeks after birth.
  • U4–U7a: usually spread across the first and second year of life.
  • U8 and U9: around the 4th and 5th birthday.

Before the appointment

  • Note down questions that came up between appointments.
  • Look into the U booklet (the check-up record) – earlier notes help the conversation.
  • Plan some time after the appointment for closeness or a playground.

During the appointment

  • You're allowed to ask questions, including about topics like sleep, nutrition or behaviour.
  • If a finding worries you, calmly ask for the next steps to be explained.

When worries remain

  • Social-paediatric centres or early-intervention services support many families further.
  • A second opinion is allowed – it's not a breach of trust.

You're part of the team for your child – not a patient in the waiting room.
