Gentle bathing: calm bath moments with your baby

Small routines that turn bath time into a relaxed ritual.

Bathing doesn't have to happen every day – once or twice a week is usually enough in the first months.

Preparation

  • Water temperature around 37 degrees, everything within reach (towel, bodysuit, nappy).
  • A warm, quiet room, phone on silent.
  • A short bath of 5–10 minutes is enough for most babies.

During the bath

  • One hand securely supports the neck and shoulder.
  • Talking, humming or singing softly can relax you both.
  • If your baby cries: pause briefly rather than pushing through.

Afterwards

  • Pat gently dry, especially in skin folds.
  • Warmth and skin-to-skin contact right after the bath are often worth their weight in gold.

If you feel unsure about bathing: your midwife is happy to show you.
