What to keep in mind when you're travelling while pregnant.

Travel can be perfectly possible in many phases of pregnancy – with a few small adjustments.

Before the trip

  • Discuss with your midwife or gynaecologist whether the planned trip suits your situation.
  • Always take your maternity record (in Germany, the Mutterpass); a photo on your phone is a useful extra.
  • Check your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or carry your insurance documents for treatment abroad.

On the way

  • On long journeys, get up regularly and move your legs.
  • Drink enough and keep snacks handy.
  • Comfortable clothing, and compression stockings for flights or long periods of sitting.

If symptoms occur

  • For bleeding, severe abdominal pain, contractions or unusual weakness: call the local emergency number (112) or use the non-emergency medical on-call service (in Germany, 116117).

You're allowed to change your plans – even at short notice.
