Pumping for a preemie is a labour of love – and often exhausting.

What helps many parents

  • Discuss a realistic pumping frequency with your midwife or lactation consultant.
  • Keep a photo, video or piece of the baby's clothing within reach for the let-down reflex.
  • Warmth on the breast before pumping, gentle massage in between.

In everyday life

  • Set up pumping spots: cushion, water, a snack, your favourite series.
  • Don't compare amounts every day – fluctuations are normal.
  • Plan in breaks and take good care of your body (eat, drink, rest).

Getting help

  • For pain, lumps or fever, call your midwife or gynaecologist straight away; in an urgent case, the non-emergency medical on-call service (in Germany, 116117).
  • Lactation consultants (IBCLC) often offer support specifically for preemie parents.

Every amount is a gift – and "not being able to breastfeed" is not a failure.
