Asking your partner for help: clear instead of accusing

Small phrasings that share the load without sparking an argument.

Asking for help is a skill – and it's allowed to be one you practise.

Clear sentences

  • "I'm at the end of my strength right now. Can you take over for the next 30 minutes?"
  • "We need a plan for tonight: who does what after 7 pm?"
  • "I'm short on sleep. How can we split the night?"

What helps many people

  • Be specific instead of "just do more": task, time window, outcome.
  • Add appreciation alongside it ("Thank you for doing the shopping today.").
  • Don't sort out conflict topics at night – find a calm slot.

When nothing gets through

  • Couples therapy, a family counselling service or your midwife can create a good framework.
  • With aggression or threats, help matters more than politeness. In Germany, the Violence Against Women support line is 116 016, available 24/7.

You're allowed to ask for help – this is family work, not a solo marathon.
