The cord stump mostly needs one thing: to be kept dry, clean and left in peace.
Daily care
- Touch it with clean hands only – no powder, no creams.
- Fold the nappy down below the cord so air can reach it.
- If it gets visibly soiled, clean gently with plain water and pat dry.
Pay attention if you notice
- Redness that is spreading.
- Foul-smelling discharge or pus.
- Fever or a listless, "off" impression.
Getting help
- Contact your midwife or paediatrician if anything looks unusual.
- For clear signs of illness in the evening or at weekends: the non-emergency medical on-call service (in Germany, 116117).
The cord stump usually falls off on its own within the first 1–2 weeks – it's okay to be patient.
