Bureaucracy can feel exhausting – a clear plan makes it easier.

Key points

  • Maternity protection (Mutterschutz): usually 6 weeks before and 8 weeks after birth (often longer for preemies).
  • Parental leave (Elternzeit): in Germany, you can apply in writing up to the 7th week of your baby's life.
  • Parental allowance (Elterngeld): register in good time with the responsible parental-allowance office, ideally within the first few weeks.

What can help you

  • Make a list of deadlines and addresses, on paper if you like.
  • Inform your employer early, but at your own pace.
  • If you're unsure: ask free counselling services, your midwife or pregnancy advice centres.

You don't have to manage all this alone – questions are allowed.
