Travelling with a baby is doable – with less of a programme and more buffer time.
By car
- Fit the infant car seat correctly (rear-facing), and have it checked regularly.
- Plan longer journeys in stages with breaks every 1.5–2 hours.
- Sun shades on the windows, light clothing, water for the parents.
On the train
- Reserve seats with a table or an area for the pram.
- Check in advance for a place to feed or change a nappy.
- Board and get off slowly if needed – avoid travelling at rush hour.
Staying gentle
- An emergency bag: a change of clothes, snacks, a dummy, a blanket, a muslin cloth.
- Think through a plan B: a hotel, family, an earlier return.
- If anyone feels unwell on the way: the out-of-hours medical service (in Germany, 116117) or your local equivalent; emergency number 112 (EU-wide).
You don't have to produce lovely travel stories for others – arriving is enough.
