Settling in is about building a relationship – not just a question of logistics.
Before the start
- Understand the setting's daily rhythm and align it at home where it fits.
- Allow a transitional object (cuddly toy, a cloth with your scent).
- Keep your own appointments to a minimum during the settling-in period – you'll both need energy.
During the settling-in
- Collect them punctually and predictably – reliability builds trust.
- Make goodbyes clear: short, honest, no sneaking away.
- Tears are okay – yours too.
When it stays hard
- Have regular short conversations with the key carer.
- If your child is under strain for a long time: renegotiate the pace, and if needed bring in your paediatrician or a parenting counselling service.
A longer settling-in is not a failure – it gives your family a stable foundation.
