Birth plan, light: noting your wishes without a script

A short birth plan can offer security – without rigid expectations.

A birth plan is an invitation to a conversation, not a contract.

What you're allowed to put into words

  • Who accompanies you (partner, doula, family member).
  • What helps you feel comfortable: light, music, movement, water.
  • Wishes around pain relief, position and bonding after birth.

A gentle frame

  • Keep it all to one page – short and friendly.
  • Write sentences that show flexibility, e.g. "If possible, I'd like to…".
  • Discuss the draft with your midwife or in your antenatal class.

Plans are allowed to change on the day itself – that's not failure, it's life happening.
