The first visit is often overwhelming – it's allowed to feel that way.
Beforehand
- Bring a familiar person with you, if you can.
- Comfortable clothing you can move well in.
- Bring a small note with questions – your mind often feels blank.
On site
- Ask staff about the routine, hygiene and what touch is allowed.
- With the sounds and alarms: trust the team, who can put them in context.
- If you feel dizzy or you cry: that's okay, you're allowed to take a break.
Afterwards
- Write down your experiences, share them with your partner or midwife.
- Prioritise a warm meal and sleep – that, too, is bonding.
If you feel you're in crisis: in Germany, TelefonSeelsorge (0800 111 0 111) is available 24/7; elsewhere, look for a local emotional-support helpline.
