Bonding also builds without skin contact – your voice, your smell and your presence count.
Gentle ideas
- Place a hand on the incubator and breathe calmly – sometimes a hand may go inside, too.
- In a soft voice, tell or sing about what you feel and see.
- Leave a small, freshly worn piece of fabric near your baby (if the team allows).
With your partner
- Coordinate visits in turns, so you both keep your energy.
- Collect photos and short videos – also for siblings at home.
Gently with yourself
- Bonding at the incubator feels different from how it looks "in the book". Comparison hurts – trust grows.
- If you feel nothing: that's not a flaw, it's often protection. Talk to the unit's psychologist or your midwife.
You're the mum already – even through glass.
