"No" is a complete sentence – even to people who mean well.
Possible wordings
- "We can't manage a visit today. We'll be in touch as soon as it works."
- "Right now we need small, short get-togethers."
- "Gifts and food left at the door are welcome – visits a little later."
Inner permission
- You don't have to apologise for needing sleep.
- Feelings of guilt are allowed to be there – they aren't the truth.
- Ask your partner or a mum friend to back you up on cancellations.
When the pressure stays
- Agree on one short, shared family line instead of fighting battles individually.
- For relationships that stay persistently intrusive: bring in a counselling service (for example pro familia, Caritas, Diakonie, or a local equivalent) or a therapist.
You're not only protecting yourself – you're protecting a whole young family.
