Latching is practice for both of you – not a talent that simply has to be there.
What helps many
- Choose a comfortable, well-supported position for your back.
- Tummy to tummy, nose at nipple height, mouth wide open.
- If it hurts, re-latch rather than pushing through.
Staying gentle
- Short feeding sessions are okay – your baby is practising too.
- Warmth, water and a snack within reach help you stay calm.
- For sore nipples, ongoing pain or worries about how much your baby is taking: talk to your midwife or a lactation consultant (IBCLC).
You're allowed to ask for help early – that's not "too sensitive", it's wise.
